Three House Break-ins Reported Last Week in Easton

Last Monday, police investigated three houses that had been broken into, including one where the suspect was caught in the act.

Easton Police engaged in the pursuit of one man after he was allegedly caught in the act of breaking in to a Foundry Street home. Police received a call from a resident at approximately 1 p.m. on Dec. 12. who said a breaking and entering was in progress. The suspect then fled on foot, eastbound towards route 106. Easton received help in the search from Raynham PD's K-9 unit, and a suspect matching the description was spotted at power lines near Prospect Street by a witness who said the white-male was in his late 20's with a "reddish-brown goatee approximately two inches long." There were no arrests and the matter is under investigation. The breaking and entering was one of three reported last Monday in Easton. Another was reported at 5:…

New Grant Looks to Aid Cyclists and Walkers in Easton

Planning part of South Coast Rail assistance.

Easton planners are looking to make the town more bike and pedestrian friendly, using the latest round of state assistance through the South Coast Rail corridor plan. The technical assistance, worth $10,000, will go towards planning to make three areas in town better suited to cyclists and walkers who are taking public transportation.  The assistance comes from the Old Colony Planning Council, which has assisted in other train-related projects as well.  This particular project focuses on the Roche Brothers Plaza, North Easton village, and the intersection of 123 and 138, which is now called the Queset Commercial District.  They are considered to be “priority development areas,” which are slated for planned development near the proposed …

Any bike lane added on route 138 could be dangerous because of the dramatic growth in drifting drivers who are either texting or are on their cell phones. If bike lanes were added fifteen years ago, they would have been closed by now because of the dangerous wandering driving habits of coffee drinking, lunch eating, texting and smart phone/cell phone drivers.   more ›

Pumping Iron In Easton

And I'm Not Talking About Shovels Or Furnace Village

America is a bit of a paradox in terms of health and fitness.  For sure, we have a body and fitness obsessed culture, one in which gyms and health clubs proliferate – and in which the fitness industry continues to expand rapidly.   Yet we are also fatter than ever. Go figure.  In my estimation, two of the biggest precursors to the fitness fervor and numbers of fitness and health centers of today were the running boom, which was ushered in with America’s Frank Shorter winning the gold medal in the marathon in the 1972 Olympics, and also the iron pumping bodybuilding craze which launched in the mid to late 1960s. It was in the late ‘60s that the boys in Easton started hoisting and pushing and pulling weights.  It wasn’t a big crowd but it …

Sign Bylaw Discussed in Joint Meeting

Local officials are looking for solutions regarding a bylaw that was amended at the last town meeting.

Easton's town committees are planning to work together to find a final solution to Easton's bylaw relating to internally illuminated signs, which was amended at last May's town meeting. The bylaw, established in 2010 to ban internally lit signs for businesses not "grandfathered in" was changed in May to allow certain new businesses, particularly those in large plazas, to have internally lit sings with approval from the Planning and Zoning Board. The quick change was added to help businesses that said they were struggling as a result of the ban. Now, the board is looking to add a more comprehensive bylaw regarding internally illuminated signage. "We need to come up with a bylaw that is sensitive to existing internally illuminated properties…

Easton Riders Roll to Support the Homeless at the 2011 Rodman Ride For Kids

Easton residents August Gangi, Jennifer Meyers, Ted Myles, Lori Prew, Diane Gangi, Elizabeth Puopolo, Sharon Beals, Bridget Dumoulin, Mary Catherine Ring, Bruce Ring, Dennis Harkins, Cathy Kligler, and Roger Kligler all participated in the ride.

Submitted to Easton Patch: It was a desire to do “some kind of volunteering” that first prompted August Gangi of Easton to become an afterschool tutor for a child experiencing homelessness with School on Wheels of Massachusetts in 2007. But after meeting SOWMA Executive Director Cheryl Opper, also of Easton, and falling “in love” with the organization’s mission, the insurance brokerage and risk management services executive felt the need to do more. So the day after the tutor training, he purchased dictionaries and calculators to give to SOWMA students, asked his employer, Risk Strategies Company (RSC), to donate backpacks, school supplies and money, and rode in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Rodman Ride for Kids to raise funds for students …
