State Wants Quick Action in Casino Process

The state sent a letter this week urging "early and expeditious approval."

The state is pushing hard for fast action regarding a casino 10 miles from the Easton town border in Taunton. According to Southcoasttoday.com, the state sent a letter this week urging "early and expeditious approval" even though the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has yet to file all the required documents in its application for the federal government to take 316 acres into federal trust. The urging came in the form of a 13-page letter issued by Mark Reilly, Governor Deval Patrick's Chief Counsel. In Easton, officials have expressed concerns about a casino so close to the Shovel Town (the proposed Taunton casino is at the intersection of Route 24 and 140). Mashpee Wampanoag Linguist Brings Story to Stonehill

The event will be at the Martin Institute on Oct. 27

Submitted to Easton Patch: Jessie Little Doe Baird has spent her career researching, teaching, and preserving rich linguistic traditions of indigenous peoples. Her story compelled producer Anne Makepeace to create the film “We Still Live Here” in which Baird stars. The film will be shown at the Martin Institute on Thursday, October 27 at 7 p.m. Baird will then visit the Martin Institute herself to speak about her journey to the Stonehill College Community on Wednesday November 2 at 7 p.m. Baird’s current trajectory began with a dream. She had a recurring dream, three nights in a row, in which she heard the words “we are here” in the native language of Wampanoag. At the time, she had no idea what the words meant.
