State police will operate a checkpoint "Friday into Saturday" during "varied hours" on a "public way."
Drivers in Bristol County could be stopped at a checkpoint this weekend to determine if they are sober. Massachusetts State Police announced a sobriety checkpoint will be set up "Friday into Saturday" during "varied hours" on a "public way." A state police press release says, "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public's awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways." The release further states, "The selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary, safety will be assured, and any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety." Massachusetts State Police and local police departments will be out this holiday weekend looking for drunk, impaired and dangerous drivers.
Drunk driving arrests by Massachusetts State Police increased by 30 percent or more than 1,100 drivers, said Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Timothy Allen at a press conference outside of Massachusetts State Police headquarters in Framingham Friday morning. As of yesterday, Dec. 27, Massachusetts State Police had arrested 4,866 individuals and charged them with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. In 2011, Massachusetts State Police arrested 3,728 individuals. The single car-crash took place on Foundry Street in Easton Saturday night.
Easton and Massachusetts State Police are investigating a reported fatal motor vehicle accident that took place on Foundry Street/Rte. 106 Saturday night. Easton police and Massachusetts State Police said the accident took place at 285 Foundry St. The victim is currently identified as 76-year-old Frederick L Haarer Jr. of 16 Richard Street Foxborough. The incident remains under investigation. Just prior to the accident police received a call reporting an erratic operator on Route 106. Moments later, the crash was reported via numerous 911 calls. A routine sobriety checkpoint for drivers in Bristol County is slated for the weekend.
Drivers in the Bristol County area should take note that Massachusetts State Police will hold a sobriety checkpoint Friday night into Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, according to an announcement from Colonel Timothy P. The Massachusetts State Police increased patrols on Route 24 and ran a sobriety checkpoint in Norfolk County this Thanksgiving weekend, which resulted in a number of OUI arrests, other offenses and hundreds of citations.
Massachusetts State Police Troopers made 20 OUI arrests and issued almost 350 citations on area roadways this holiday weekend - the result of increased patrols on Routes 24 and 195 and a sobriety checkpoint in Canton, according to a press release from the MSP. The State Police deployed increased patrols on Routes 24 and 195 in southeastern Massachusetts, the evenings of Friday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 24 as "part of the department’s ongoing efforts to curb impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving on those roads," the MSP stated in a press release. After 90 OUI arrests and over 1,400 citations during a summer patrol surge, State Police say the will continue to crack down on impaired or erratic operators.
Massachusetts State Police announced Wednesday morning that while the nearly three-month patrol surge in Southeastern Massachusetts along Routes 24 and 195 may be over, there will continue to be a concerted effort to crack down on unsafe drivers. "Any time an impaired operators are removed from our roadways, our roadways are safer," State Police Troop D Commander Major Anthony Thomas said during a press conference at the Route 24 rest stop in Bridgewater Tuesday morning. The surge, which began in late July after a string of fatal accidents in the area, was focused on achieving just what Thomas described. Police were in full force on area highways this past weekend.
In week two of a new surge plan put in place on Routes 24 and 195, State Police upped the ante. Troopers arrested 10 drivers and issued 262 citations on Friday and Saturday night for drunk driving on local highways; an increase from last week's nine arrests and 222 citations. The new plan was put in place last month in response to a slew of fatal and near-fatal accidents on Route 24, including a fatal accident in West Bridgewater near the Easton town line. 11 additional troopers were added to Routes 24 and 195 between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
