Editors' Picks: Most Notable Sports Moment of 2012

Your group of local patch editors weighs in on the standout sports moments of the year.

Editor's Note: The following is part of a special "end-of-the-year" series in which local editors from your nearby Patch towns highlight their favorites in various topics.   Jonathan Friedman - Editor, Attleboro-Seekonk Patch From my earliest days through college, I was a competitive swimmer. I was never good enough to be an Olympian, but I have a tremendous respect for those who are. And every four years, it is exciting to see swimming in the spotlight. Special kudos go to Michael Phelps, who looked like he had lost his magic when he didn't even win a medal in his first individual event, the 400 IM (first time since 2000 that had happened), but then regained it later in the week with spectacular wins in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, while…

AAAAGGGGHHH!!

No Joy in Mudville ... I Mean New England ... and in Easton

AAAAGGGGHHH!! Eli @$%#^*% Manning Mario #@%^&(% Mannigham. Oh, man that was tough.   Wes Welker?  You never not make that catch.   Gronk had a shot at the Hail Mary.  I knew well a very successful high school football coach who told me that in games he coached in which is team was blown out, he often slept well.   Weird, huh?   He said in those instances he could look back and be fairly confident that nothing different he could have done could have resulted in victory. But games he coached in which his team lost a close one – when it came down to one play or two – well, those were the games that kept him up at night.  I just know that this game and the way it played out will at least lightly haunt many of us.   If only that.  Or if only …

Coach Artz Breaks Down Super Bowl

Oliver Ames football coach Jim Artz takes a look at Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

While Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are gearing up for Super Bowl XLVI against the New York Giants, Oliver Ames High School head football coach Jim Artz is coming off a Super Bowl appearance of his own. Last fall, Artz led the Tigers to their first league championship since 1968 and the program's first ever appearance in an MIAA Super Bowl. While he is waiting to begin his 7th year at the helm for OA, we asked him to break down this year's NFL Super Bowl. Here are Coach Artz's five keys to the game: Key No. 1: Rob Gronkowski. The health of Gronkowski will greatly alter the Patriots' game plan. If healthy and ready to go, it creates many matchup problems for the giants. The Patriots do a great job in their no huddle high …

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: What Would Easton Wager?

If Easton were in the Super Bowl, what would be the wager?

No bets were wagered late last fall when the Oliver Ames Tigers took on Concord-Carlisle in the Division 3 football Super Bowl. But if the town did have to wager something what would it be? Yesterday, in a bet that the Patriots would win the Super Bowl over the New York Giants, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino wagered a free trip to Boston, complete with dinners at the best restaurants and a tour of the Samuel Adams Brewery. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg wagered a similar trip to New York. Today, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick wagered 46 Centerville Pies, Legal Sea Foods clam chowder and 46 cases of all natural chips from Food Should Taste Good. So, what proud commodity would Easton wager? Perhaps a bar-style pizza from Buddy's Union …

@ Bill "The Swede" Anderson, if it helps for clarification purposes, @Ross Muscato wrote a column on the Easton/Patch on January 9, 2012 entitled: "Taking the Tippy's Tiger" - A Swipe and a Prank for the Ages. We have the SuperBowl coming up and March Madness too. Where the taking of the Tippy's Tiger and the photo in that column of Ross Muscato's were featured recently, I thought it might make …   more ›

Muscato's Musings

Tweets, Emails, Texts, And Facebook Postings From Easton's Past

Technology Goes Back To The Future

First off, the subject of this column is my sister, Suzy’s, idea. It is a nice idea for a column, and I have glommed on to it.  Suzy said it would be neat to wonder and write about what Easton historical figures, in this day of online and instantaneous networked communication, might email or post on Facebook, or Tweet or text.   I am a huge fan of Blanche Ames (1878-1969), a true Renaissance woman, who did it all; she is described in Wikipedia as an artist, inventor, writer, and prominent supporter of women’s suffrage and birth control. She was all that, and more. Ms. Ames was married to Harvard botany professor Oakes Ames (1874-1950). The couple lived in the beautiful estate at Borderland, which is now Borderland State Park. When the …
