OA Boys' Basketball Falls Short Against Canton, Drops Fourth Straight

Canton surges past OA behind second half effort Tuesday night.

One team left Tuesday’s game at the Nixon Gymnasium with a huge momentum boost, while another found itself still stuck in a mid-season slump. Behind 19 points from senior tri-captain Joe McCabe, the Canton High boys’ basketball team earned a convincing 69-66 victory over Oliver Ames and improved to 6-3 on the season (3-2 Hockomock League, 2-1 Davenport). OA, however, has now lost four straight after starting the year at 5-0. The Tigers drop to 3-4 in league play and 1-2 against the small Hock. “We’ve won a lot of close games this year, and that’s because we are very resilient and have good senior leadership,” said first year Canton coach Ryan Gordy. “They’ve really bought into a new coaching style and I’m very fortunate to have those …

Late Second Half Run Sparks OA Girls' Basketball Past Mansfield

Lady Tigers use 20-3 second half run to defeat Hornets Friday night.

For over 20 minutes, the Oliver Ames girls’ basketball team looked like they would be in for a grind against Mansfield Friday night at the Nixon Gymnasium. The two teams traded buckets throughout that span where the lead changed hands nine times. Towards the end of the third quarter, however, the Lady Tigers took the lead for good during a 20-3 second half run and came away with a 54-40 victory over the Hornets. With the game tied at 37, guards Kate Holleran and Asia Mitchell put OA ahead for good with two clutch three pointer’s at the end of the third quarter. “That run really got the energy going and got us moving in the right direction,” said OA coach Elaine Clement Holbrook, whose team is now 7-1. “Those three’s at the end of the …

Oliver Ames Wrestling Clinches Share of Davenport Division in Win Over Foxborough

Tigers earn the first six pinfalls en route to a 57-20 victory Wednesday night at the Nixon Gymnasium.

It looks like head coach Adam Pomella has his Oliver Ames wrestling team is peaking at the right time. Following an impressive win over Mansfield on Monday, OA followed up by clinching a share of the Davenport Division after its 57-20 dual-meet victory over Foxborough Wednesday night at the Nixon Gymnasium. OA, which can clinch the small Hock outright with a win against Canton next week, improves to 7-5. Foxborough, meanwhile, dropped to 6-8. “I was very happy with how our team performed,” said Pomella. “Everyone stepped up and wrestled their best, which is what we needed today." With the luck of the draw, OA got the momentum they needed early. Pinfall wins from Nick Hutchinson (over Jack Shoener in the 170) Matt Harding (over Steve …

Oliver Ames Girls' Basketball Cruises to Victory Over Stoughton

Lady Tigers improve to 6-0 after 60-19 victory over the Black Knights (2-4).

It’s no secret that the Oliver Ames girls’ basketball team prides itself on having a good defensive effort. Once again, that approach paid dividends Friday night at the Nixon Gymnasium as the Lady Tigers cruised to a 60-19 victory over Stoughton and improved to 6-0 on the season (2-0 Davenport Division/Hockomock League). “It was top to bottom on of the better efforts in terms of their contributions,” said OA coach Elaine Clement-Holbrook. “We talk about playing as a team and having good teamwork and I was proud with how everyone performed tonight.” From the opening whistle, OA was just a step ahead of the pack. As part of a 21-2 first quarter run, the Lady Tigers forced 10 of Stoughton’s 30 turnovers Friday night and used the transition …

First Quarter Run Propels OA Boys' Basketball to Val Muscato Championship

OA uses 14-6 run at the end of the first quarter en route to 62-52 victory over Medfield in the championship game of the Muscato Tournament.

This was the start Oliver Ames boys’ basketball coach Don Byron was looking for all along. After trailing Medfield 8-6 in the first four minutes of the Val Muscato Tournament finals, the Tigers quickly turned the corner and went on a 14-6 run to end the first quarter en route to a 62-52 victory Friday night at the Nixon Gymnasium. “That was the last thing we mentioned in the locker room tonight,” Byron said. “We came out of the locker room [to start the game] a little bit better, which is something I was thankful for. We made it a point of emphasis and it went a long way tonight.” Although it took a little while to adjust to Medfield’s zone defenses, OA made some adjustments to counter Big Blue’s look. With Medfield’s focus primarily on …

Well-Rounded Effort Lifts OA Girls' Basketball to Sue Rivard Championship

Lady Tigers earn decisive 82-32 victory over Plymouth South in the Sue Rivard Tournament finals.

It might have taken a little longer than anticipated, but the Oliver Ames girls’ basketball team got the memo delivered by coach Elaine Clement-Holbrook. In what was the best all-around effort in the early part of the season, the Lady Tigers earned a decisive 82-32 victory over Plymouth South in the finals of the Sue Rivard tournament Wednesday night at the Nixon Gymnasium. “My feeling was this was the best collective effort since the season started,” said Clement-Holbrook, whose team is now 4-0 on the year. “The main topic of conversation in the dressing room after the game was the pure example of teamwork.” Thanks to the transition game, OA never trailed throughout the contest. The Lady Tigers stole the ball 22 times while also dishing …

OA Boys' Basketball Overcomes Another Slow First Quarter to Defeat Dartmouth

Tigers overcome seven-point first quarter deficit to defeat Dartmouth, 88-59, in the first round of the Val Muscato Tournament (championship game Friday vs. Medfield 7:30 p.m.)

Coming into Tuesday’s game against Dartmouth in the first round of the Val Muscato Tournament, Oliver Ames boys’ basketball coach Don Byron was looking for his team to come out of the gate quickly; something they hadn’t done in their first three wins of the season. Once again, though, the Tigers got off to another slow start, trailing the Indians 25-18 after the first quarter. But once again, OA was able to overcome the sluggish start and run Dartmouth out of the Nixon Gymnasium en route to an 88-59 victory to improve to 4-0. “We talk about it all the time,” said Byron, whose team will face Medfield in the finals of the Muscato tournament Friday night at 7:30 p.m. “We talked about it for two days ‘let’s come out of the thing right, let’s …

OA Girls' Basketball Downs Bridgewater-Raynham in First Round of Sue Rivard Tourney

Lady Tigers improve to 3-0 following 56-19 frist round win over Bridgewater-Raynham. They will face Plymouth South in the Sue Rivard finals Wednesday night (7:30 p.m.) at the Nixon Gymnasium.

While the Oliver Ames girls’ basketball team is still searching for an offensive identity in the early part of the 2011-12 season, they have made up for it with excellent defense. Tuesday’s 56-19 victory over Bridgewater-Raynham in the first round of the Sue Rivard Invitational was just another example of how their 3-0 season has gone so far. “We’re still kind of in that infancy stage,” said OA coach Elaine-Clement Holbrook. “Defensively, we’ve been playing well early, but I don’t think we realize what we’re capable of doing when we’re at our best.” Despite a 15-point halftime lead (26-11), the Lady Tigers were still looking for some answers offensively. But as the third quarter progressed, OA was finally able to use its experience to its …

OA Girls' Basketball Weathers Fourth Quarter Run to Down Sharon

Lady Tigers hang on for 43-37 season opening victory against their rivals.

As the old adage goes “a win is a win.” Despite a 10-0 fourth quarter run by Sharon, the Oliver Ames girls' basketball team hung on for a 43-37 victory Tuesday night in its season opener at the Nixon Gymnasium. OA improves to 1-0 on the young season, while Sharon drops to 0-2. “Wow, was that ugly,” said a relieved Elaine Clement-Holbrook after coaching her team to victory. “But, we got the victory nonetheless. We have a lot of work ahead of us but at least we’re 1-0 to start the year.” The first three quarters showed little sign of an OA letdown. During that span, the Lady Tigers forced 11 of the Eagles' 13 turnovers paving the way to a 36-17 lead. Although OA’s offense had trouble generating some points, the defense held Sharon to 20 …

OA Boys' Basketball Overcomes Slow Start in Season Opening Win Over Attleboro

Tigers overcome a 12-point first quarter deficit to defeat Attleboro, 89-68.

After trailing Attleboro 23-11 at the end of the first quarter, the Oliver Ames boys’ basketball team wasted little time coming back and overcoming a slow start Friday night in the Nixon Gymnasium on its way to a 89-68 opening night win. Following a rough first eight minutes, the Tigers stormed to an 18-2 second quarter run. During that span, OA senior tri-captain Nick Bruha (led all scorers with 21 points) put his team ahead for good at 27-25 with his two technical foul free throws. Junior guard St. Claire Ryan contributed with 17 points, while duo of senior forwards Jeff Babbitt (16 points, 8 rebounds in his first varsity start) and Alex Tepper (8 rebounds) also provided a spark in the victory. “Everyone was just trying to get the first …
