OA Baseball Looks to Continue Winning Tradition

Already 2-0, the Tigers are poised to be a powerhouse in the Hockomock League.

At Frothingham Park, winning hasn't been hard to come by. The Oliver Ames baseball team is coming off a 15-6 season a year ago and a 20-2 season the year before. With the majority of last year's Davenport Division championship team returning, the Tigers hope their winning tradition will continue in 2012. "Our first goal is to try to qualify for the tournament because we’ve qualified 24 out of 26 years," head coach Leo Duggan said. "That’s our first goal and then it’s just to keep improving every day." If the first two games are any indication, the 2-0 Tigers have little to improve upon so far. OA defeated Attleboro 7-0 last week and handily beat Sharon 4-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Frothingham Park. In the two games, senior pitcher David …

OA Boys' Basketball Upsets Stoughton on Senior Night

Tigers put together a complete game effort to out-battle the Black Knights

OA boys' basketball coach Don Byron knew that to beat the 13-1 Stoughton Black Knights, the Tigers would have to play well in all phases of the game. His team didn't miss a beat. Offensively, defensively, on the glass and from the free-throw line, everything clicked for the Tigers in the 75-67 Davenport Division win at Oliver Ames High School on Senior Night Tuesday. With the win, OA improved to 10-5 (4-2 Davenport) and qualified for the MIAA tournament. "That was terrific end to end on both ends of the floor," Byron said. "I thought defensively, while [Stoughton guard Aaron] Calixte got his 24 (points), he had to work like crazy to get them. And, we managed to hold some of the other guys down. They have weapons everywhere. They have kids …

The OA boys and girls swim and dive teams ended their regular seasons tonight against Canton High School While the boys won 100-70, the girls Lost 102-88.   OA swim coach Lauren Gray said that although it was a tough loss for the girls, the times represented told a different story.  Junior Paige Abramson took first place with the 200 Freestyle. Junior Julia Mudd placed first in both the 200 Individual Medley  and 500 freestyle. OA Track Bests Foxborough

Both the boys and the girls track teams defeated Foxborough this weekend.

Even with multiple postseason qualifiers and season bests, the Oliver Ames Tigers were too much for the Foxborough Warriors. Competing at the second Hockomock League meet of the regular season which sees all 10 teams compete at the same time in dual meets, the Warrior girls and boys both fell to the Tigers by the identical score of 71-24 In the 55-meter dash and 300-meter run, Foxborough’s Kiivone Howard continued to improve and dominate the field. The junior ran a pair of season’s best and two wins with a 7.01 in the 55m dash and a 36.47 in the 300m run. Drew Beck of Oliver Ames once again found the success that he’s had since cross-country in the mile. Beck ran his way to an easy victory with a time of 4:35.60. The time was also the …

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Best Fall Sports Moment

What was the best moment for Oliver Ames sports this fall?

With the Oliver Ames football team finishing its season with a loss in the Division 3 Superbowl, the fall sports season at Oliver Ames is all but over. In addition to the football team's historic playoff run, it was a season that saw virtually every Oliver Ames team qualify for and compete in region-wide or state-wide tournaments. The field hockey and golf teams made incredible runs at the end of the season to qualify for playoff action. The OA boys' soccer team took a giant step forward and won the Davenport Division title. The girls' soccer team advanced to the Division I State Semi-Finals. OA's volleyball team capped off a successful season and advanced to the South Sectional Tournament as well. And, the OA Cross Country team once again…

Oliver Ames Football And The 2011 Post-Season

My Views Have Changed ... Somewhat

I’ll come clean here – when the Oliver Ames High School football team clinched the Davenport Division title and a playoff berth over in Sharon on Thanksgiving Day with a win over the Eagles, I did not consider it a big deal.  I said so fairly loudly, in writing and verbally.   I believe strongly there should be still only one Hockomock League – not a Hockomock League Rex-Kelley Division (large schools) and a Davenport Division (small schools) – and the winner of the league should be the sole Hockomock participant in the Eastern Massachusetts playoffs. (People in Easton and in the surrounding area hold strong views on this Hockomock two division business, and my Wednesday column will focus on the break up of the league and changes that …

In all, 11 athletes, one citizen, two coaches and two teams were inducted. Today, we bring to you the teams inducted in to the Hall of Fame last Saturday. 1960 OLIVER AMES HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM Oliver Ames High School was on a roll in football during this period, finishing the 1960 season with a perfect record of 9-0-0, which capped a six year run in which OA went 43-7-2.
