Oliver Ames Boys' Basketball Tournament Bound After Spoling Stoughton's Senior Night

The Tigers came away with a 77-70 win Friday night in Stoughton.

Ryan Carney and Andrew Reardon led the Oliver Ames boys' basketball team in scoring Friday night at Stoughton, but it was the fourth quarter efforts of Nick Cidado and St. Clair Ryan, who scored eight points apiece in the final frame, that led the Tigers past the Black Knights. Oliver Ames came away with a 77-70 win, spoiling Stoughton's Senior Night. The Tigers improve to 10-6, clinching a spot in the postseason state tournament. The Black Knights, meanwhile, fall to 8-10, needing to win both of their final two games to make the playoffs.  "It's a great accomplishment for these kids," Oliver Ames coach Don Byron said of making the postseason. "We started the year with 14 kids on our roster and 11 of them were JVs last year. We relied a …

OA Boys' Basketball Makes Return Trip to South Sectional Semis

Tigers make back to back appearances in Div. 2 South Semis for first time since 1998 and 1999.

They might have had one less victory than a year ago, but the end result was exactly the same for the Oliver Ames boys’ basketball team. After going 15-8 in coach Don Byron’s second year in 2010-11, the Tigers finished with a record of 14-9 during the 2011-12 campaign. Those two seasons also saw OA advance to the Division 2 South semifinals in back-to-back years – something they haven’t done since the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. Much like last year in their loss to Hopkinton in the Div. 2 South semis, the Tigers fell to the eventual Div. 2 South champs in their loss to Stoughton last week in Brockton. With those two South sectional semifinal appearances under his belt, Byron has the program going in the right direction. “A year ago when…

OA Girls' Basketball Seniors Leave Lasting Legacy

Despite early tourney loss to Fontbonne Academy, OA's seniors leave strong legacy after four years.

With a record of 18-3, the Oliver Ames girls’ basketball earned its second straight Davenport Division championship going undefeated against the Small Hock, while also playing for their second straight Hockomock Cup in the Crossover game, that resulted in a loss to Franklin. With high expectations in this year’s state tournament, however, the Lady Tigers were shocked early in the first round of the Div. 2 South sectionals against Fontbonne Academy. “It’s really difficult,” said head coach Elaine Clement-Holbrook after the loss to Fontbonne on Feb. 29. “We hate to see this end because the team just loved each other.” Despite the loss, this year’s senior class has planted the seeds for the future of the program. Led by Lexi Gold, Jen Byron, …

OA Girls' Basketball Suffers Shocking First Round Upset to Fontbonne Academy

Lady Tigers finish the season at 18-3 following 41-34 loss to Fontbonne Academy in first round of the Div. 2 South sectionals.

From the opening tipoff, the bounce favored 13th seeded Fontbonne Academy in its 41-34 upset over the fourth-seeded Oliver Ames girls basketball team in the first round of the Div. 2 South Sectionals Wednesday night at the Nixon Gymnasium. Fontbonne junior forward Georgia Bourikas sparked her team during a 12-0 first quarter run with two clutch three’s, while classmate Jenna Gemma was a force underneath the glass all night leading her team to victory with a double-double (19 points, 18 rebounds). “I can’t say enough about Jen,” said Fontbonne coach Claire Murphy. “She’s got the heart of a warrior. There was no way she was going to go home a loser tonight and she wanted this one really bad. She rebounds, she shoots, she does it all. “…

OA Boys' Basketball Upsets Stoughton on Senior Night

Tigers put together a complete game effort to out-battle the Black Knights

OA boys' basketball coach Don Byron knew that to beat the 13-1 Stoughton Black Knights, the Tigers would have to play well in all phases of the game. His team didn't miss a beat. Offensively, defensively, on the glass and from the free-throw line, everything clicked for the Tigers in the 75-67 Davenport Division win at Oliver Ames High School on Senior Night Tuesday. With the win, OA improved to 10-5 (4-2 Davenport) and qualified for the MIAA tournament. "That was terrific end to end on both ends of the floor," Byron said. "I thought defensively, while [Stoughton guard Aaron] Calixte got his 24 (points), he had to work like crazy to get them. And, we managed to hold some of the other guys down. They have weapons everywhere. They have kids …

OA Boys' Basketball Survives Late Fourth Quarter Surge Against Sharon

Tigers hang on to eliminate Eagles from state tournament contention.

Knowing that Sharon’s season was on the line, the Oliver Ames boys’ basketball team went into Friday’s contest at the Nixon Gymnasium looking to match that desperation. Despite the Eagles’ comeback bid in the fourth quarter, a last second shot from Ian Beach that would’ve tied the game fell short and OA held on for a 65-62 victory. At 9-5 overall (7-5 Hockomock League, 3-2 Davenport Division), OA is a game away from clinching another berth in the state tournament. Sharon, meanwhile, drops to 3-11 (2-10 league, 2-4 Small Hock). “It was a great effort,” Sharon coach Bruce Jackman said. “We played hard and we had a chance to steal one at the end, but it just wasn’t meant to be.” “Hats off to Sharon. I thought they were terrific,” said OA …

Nick Bruha Adds 1,000 Point Milestone To His Basketball Resume

Senior tri-captain reflects on joining the exclusive 1,000-point club.

In his four years at Oliver Ames, senior boys’ basketball tri-captain Nick Bruha has put together an impressive resume. As a freshman, Bruha helped the Tigers reach the state tournament under former coach Creig Muscato. Under current head coach Don Byron, Bruha has been the catalyst, was named to the all-Hockomock League and helped OA earn two more playoff appearances, including last year’s run in the Division 2 South Sectional semifinals. In front of a packed Nixon Gymnasium against King Philip Friday night, Bruha added to that resume and joined the likes of former Tigers Amos Anderson and Chris Tighe on the 1,000-point club. Not bad for a player who still has at least eight more games left in his swan song. “It was incredible,” Bruha …

King Philip Boys' Basketball Narrowly Edges OA

Despite Nick Bruha achieving the 1,000 point mark for his career, KP earns a thrilling 72-68 win Friday night.

For 32 minutes, the Nixon Gymnasium crowd sat on the edge of their seats. In a game that saw several lead changes and Oliver Ames senior tri-captain Nick Bruha (26 points) achieve the 1,000 point mark for his career, the King Philip boys basketball team bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Stoughton and came away with a narrow 72-68 victory Friday night. KP improves to 10-2 (6-2 Hockomock League) and clinches a berth in the state tournament, while OA falls to 7-5 (5-5). “We’ve been in two great high school basketball games the last two nights, and it’s not going to stop,” said KP coach Sean McInnis. “Oliver Ames is a tremendous team and I definitely don’t want to see them again [down the road].” Through four quarters, OA and KP took each …

OA Boys' Basketball Falls Short Against Canton, Drops Fourth Straight

Canton surges past OA behind second half effort Tuesday night.

One team left Tuesday’s game at the Nixon Gymnasium with a huge momentum boost, while another found itself still stuck in a mid-season slump. Behind 19 points from senior tri-captain Joe McCabe, the Canton High boys’ basketball team earned a convincing 69-66 victory over Oliver Ames and improved to 6-3 on the season (3-2 Hockomock League, 2-1 Davenport). OA, however, has now lost four straight after starting the year at 5-0. The Tigers drop to 3-4 in league play and 1-2 against the small Hock. “We’ve won a lot of close games this year, and that’s because we are very resilient and have good senior leadership,” said first year Canton coach Ryan Gordy. “They’ve really bought into a new coaching style and I’m very fortunate to have those …
