Oliver Ames Field Hockey Ends Season With South Sectional Quarterfinal Loss to Sandwich

No. 6 Oliver Ames fell to No. 3 Sandwich on the road Sunday afternoon.

Heading into Sunday's South Sectional quartefinal match-up against Oliver Ames, the 17-2 Sandwich field hockey team had a reputation for being unstoppable at home. In fact, the Blue Knights hadn't lost a home game all year. Unfortunately for OA, Sandwich lived up to it's reputation. Oliver Ames fell to the No. 3 seed, 2-0, and ended its season with a 16-4-2 overall record. "I thought we did pretty good getting out to a fast start but we couldn’t get the ball into the net be consistent," OA coach Janice Sundell said. "Sandwich kind of wore us down a bit and took over and we were on our heals for the rest of the game." Sandwich drew first blood with a Erin Gendreau goal less than 10 minutes into the game. With 11 minutes left in the first …

Riding High, Oliver Ames Field Hockey Looks to Upset Sandwich Sunday

OA Field Hockey will play in the South Sectional quarterfinals in Sandwich at 1 p.m. The Oliver Ames boys and girls soccer teams will begin playoff action with home games Sunday afternoon and evening.

After a dominant performance on Friday night against No. 11 Falmouth in the first round of the MIAA Div. 1 South Sectional Tournament, the Oliver Ames field hockey is taking advantage of an extra hour of sleep Saturday night and setting it's sights on a new challenge: the No. 3 Sandwich Blue Knights. The Tigers will travel to Sandwich for a 1 p.m. game Sunday. The Blue Knights boast a 17-2 overall record, and a perfect 10-0 record at home. "They play on grass, so we are back practicing on our grass field and working on our stops and trying to set up our corners on grass which is a lot different than on turf, but we’ll be ready for them because we practice on a grass field anyways," Oliver Ames head coach Janice Sundell said. "I think every…

After Successful Fall, OA Prepares for Winter Sports Season

Winter sports expected to heat up following historic fall season at Oliver Ames.

Led by the football team’s run to the Division 3 Eastern Massachusetts Super Bowl, Oliver Ames enjoyed one of the most successful fall sports seasons in recent memory. In addition to football’s success, girls’ soccer advanced to the Division 1 semifinals; the cross-country squads earned another Davenport Division title and the boys earned a first place finish in the Div. 3 Eastern Mass. championships; boys’ soccer clinched a share of the Small Hock crown with Canton; and golf, field hockey and volleyball each earned a berth in the state tournament. Now that autumn is behind us, it is time for the winter sports teams to enter the spotlight. Last year, the basketball and hockey teams advanced to the Division 2 South sectional semifinals; …

OA Field Hockey Ends Season With Loss to Powerhouse Walpole

The Tigers season ended in a 7-0 loss to Walpole in the second round of the MIAA tournament.

When OA field hockey coach Janice Sundell said the Tigers would have their hands full against No. 1 seed Walpole in the second round of the MIAA state tournament, she wasn't kidding. With just 30 seconds gone from the clock, Walpole junior Bridget Nicholson put the ball in the goal to give the Porkers a 1-0 lead. The goal set the tone and the Tigers were never able to recover, eventually losing 7-0 to the perennial power for the second year in a row in the state tournament and ending their season at 8-8-4. "We did not start out well, giving up that lousy goal in the first 30 seconds," Sundell said. That kind of set us back right off the get-go. The girls played hard. Walpole is a talented team and they never let up." In addition to Murphy…

This Week in Oliver Ames Sports

Tournament announcements highlight week ahead.

Although the football team dropped its second straight contest in its loss to North Attleboro Friday night, last week was mostly a successful one for several Oliver Ames sports teams. Starting today with field hockey, the MIAA will announce its fall sports tournament brackets. Before we get into further detail on those, let’s take a look at the week ahead in OA sports. 1. Both …

OA Field Hockey Suffers Tough Loss to Foxborough

Oliver Ames lost to Foxborough, 2-1 Monday.

On a day when the Foxborough field hockey team paid tribute to their seniors, there was no better result for the seniors. Marching towards the tournament with momentum at their side, the Warriors walked away with a 2-1 win over the Oliver Ames Tigers. It was evident from the start that Foxborough didn’t have a problem getting the ball near the Oliver Ames goal. With 13 short corners in the game the set up wasn’t the problem, but rather ability to get off a shot. “I think we’re trying so hard to make it pretty or just get that perfect shot and get our stick in the right sport to the point where we’re not getting our shot off,” said Foxborough coach Melissa Bordieri. Foxboro finally got a goal when Kelise Morahan got the ball to Katie Ennis …

Second Half Goals Lead OA Field Hockey Past Stoughton on Senior Night

Second half goals from Stephanie Watson and Alicia Alleyene lead Lady Tigers to 2-0 victory on senior night at Muscato Stadium on Monday.

At this time last year, the Oliver Ames field hockey team was in a similar position with two weeks left in its season. Twelve months later, the Lady Tigers find themselves in that same position fighting for a berth in the state tournament. Monday night at Muscato Stadium, OA started off the home stretch well, as second half goals from Stephanie Watson (at 4:53) and Alicia Alleyne (14:01) were enough to down winless Stoughton, 2-0. With the victory, OA returned to the .500 mark and is now 5-5-3 overall (3-5-3 Hockomock League, 3-2 Davenport Division). Stoughton, meanwhile, remains winless at 0-9-2 (0-8-1, 0-5). The second half was a nice ending to cap off the contributions from the class of 2012 on senior night. “I’m excited as the girls …
