Oliver Ames Wrestling Team Deals With Loss of a Captain

Coach Adam Pomella: "One of the greatest kids I've ever met."

When Oliver Ames coach Adam Pomella meets with his team Saturday, they'll all have a difficult decision to make about Sunday's upcoming Hockomock League wrestling tournament. "We’re going to let each kid individually decide what they want to do," Pomella said. "Everyone grieves in their own ways. For whoever wants to go, I’ll take them to the tournament. Everyone who doesn’t want to go, they don’t have to come." It is a meeting Pomella wishes he didn't have to hold. The Tigers are dealing with the loss of one of their captains - Devin Ness. Ness suddenly passed away Friday morning as the result of a brain anurysm. His character is something that will be missed. "Devin is one of the greatest kids I’ve ever met," Pomella said. "He’s …

After a series of 14 mostly back-and-forth matches, the Oliver Ames wrestling team finished tied, 27-27, with Hockomock League Davenport Division rival Stoughton Wednesday at OA, but Stoughton was declared winner of the meet after the Black Knights took eight individual matches to OA's six. Matt Weisman (106), Shea O'Conor (126), Jamison Dixon (132), Cody Scully (138), Matt Berksza (152) and Jake McCade (220) earned individual wins for OA. Weisman, Dixon and McCade recorded pins. Winter sports will kick off next weekend and next week

We're moving indoors. Oliver Ames winter sports will officially begin this weekend when the OA wrestling team competes in the Easton tournament and the OA winter track team takes on Milford. Basketball, hockey and the rest of OA's winter sports will kick off next week. Matt Harding Reaches 100 Career Victories

Three OA wrestlers reached the finals in the Hockomock Tournament

  Submitted to Easton Patch: Oliver Ames Senior Captain Matt Harding went undefeated in the Hockomock Tournament in North Attleboro today, and as he prepared for the title match to win the tournament championship in his weight class, he knew it wasn't just another match.  Harding, his family, friends and the entire OA team knew exactly what it meant.  It would represent his 100th career victory as a high school wrestler for Oliver Ames, the first wrestler in OA team history to accomplish that feat.   Achieving the 100 win mark is a milestone that very few high school wrestlers ever achieve.  The 100 win club is typically limited to wrestlers with very special talent and Harding has exactly that.  With this milestone achieved and behind him…

Oliver Ames Wrestling Clinches Share of Davenport Division in Win Over Foxborough

Tigers earn the first six pinfalls en route to a 57-20 victory Wednesday night at the Nixon Gymnasium.

  It looks like head coach Adam Pomella has his Oliver Ames wrestling team is peaking at the right time. Following an impressive win over Mansfield on Monday, OA followed up by clinching a share of the Davenport Division after its 57-20 dual-meet victory over Foxborough Wednesday night at the Nixon Gymnasium. OA, which can clinch the small Hock outright with a win against Canton next week, improves to 7-5. Foxborough, meanwhile, dropped to 6-8. “I was very happy with how our team performed,” said Pomella. “Everyone stepped up and wrestled their best, which is what we needed today." OA Wrestling Downs Stoughton For First Dual Meet Victory

Tigers earn hard fought win over Davenport rivals to open their dual meet season.

  After a second place finish in Saturday’s OA opener, Oliver Ames wrestling coach Adam Pomella came into Wednesday’s Davenport Division dual-meet against Stoughton without seniors Matt Harding and Nick Hutchinson, who were nursing their injuries. What started out as a concern for Pomella turned into a hard-fought 57-18 victory over an improved Stoughton squad at the Nixon Gymnasium. “We had a couple of our starters [Harding and Hutchinson] so I was worried going into the meet,” Pomella said. “I’m psyched about the outcome. We had a couple of 50-50 matchups that our kids won and what won it for us was the depth.” Even without Harding and Hutchinson, OA showed its depth in many of those “50-50” matchups as Pomella alluded to. OA Wrestling Looking to Improve on Last Season's Success

With veteran leadership and strong rookie class, wrestling squad looking to make an impact in sixth season of varsity status.

At the end of last year, the Oliver Ames wrestling program transitioned itself from a dual-meet squad to a tournament team. Entering year six at the helm, head coach Adam Pomella hopes for his team to sustain its tournament success and improve on its dual-meet record. “I think we’ll be a good mix this year between tournament and dual-meet,” he said. “We have a ton of rookies who are looking phenomenal this year, so I think our dual-meet will be better than it was last year. But we are still looking for some kids to make some real, deep tournament runs.” With a lot of youth injected into the program and a healthy mix of veterans, the Tigers will look to take advantage of their depth.
