Sign Bylaw Discussed in Joint Meeting

Local officials are looking for solutions regarding a bylaw that was amended at the last town meeting.

Easton's town committees are planning to work together to find a final solution to Easton's bylaw relating to internally illuminated signs, which was amended at last May's town meeting. The bylaw, established in 2010 to ban internally lit signs for businesses not "grandfathered in" was changed in May to allow certain new businesses, particularly those in large plazas, to have internally lit sings with approval from the Planning and Zoning Board. The quick change was added to help businesses that said they were struggling as a result of the ban. Now, the board is looking to add a more comprehensive bylaw regarding internally illuminated signage. Easton Officials Discuss 'Scenic Road' Bylaw [Poll]

Officials could act on a bylaw passed in 1998 that protects certain stone walls and trees.

It’s their property and it hasn’t been designated scenic." The issue was discussed during a joint meeting Monday night with the Historical Commission and the Planning and Zoning Board at the Town of Easton Offices. One obstacle officials …

Good Post Dwight and probably one of the best solutions, as long as in the end the land owner has the right to remove after they jump through a few hoops. I am not for wiping out history and the importance of the past but there needs to be a limit on what we can expect people to do with thier property.   more ›

Varella Appointed as Planning and Zoning Board Alternate

John Varella gets the nod from selectmen to serve as the Planning and Zoning Board's new alternate.

Corporate and tax lawyer, and longtime Easton resident John Varella was appointed by selectmen this week to serve on the Planning and Zoning Board as an alternate. Varella told selectmen that his background reading codes, specifically in the tax area, could be helpful while serving on the board. "I am very comfortable reading bylaws," Varella said. "I think I’ve got some training there that will be of assistance." Selectman voted unanimously to appoint Varella with one abstention. Deric Lipski, a realtor in town, was the other candidate. Selectman Dan Murphy, a local accountant, abstained because Lipski is a client of his. Varella is a graduate of Oliver Ames High School and a board member at the Sheep Pasture. The selectmen always, every single time, pick a lawyer over the other candidate. Going forward, the Towns application should simply be: Are you a lawyer? (yes) or (no) please circle one.   more ›
