What's Your One Request of the Returning College Kids?

Moving Day at Stonehill was last week. If you could get the returning college students to change one thing about how they act and interact, what would it be?

That low, steady hum you hear in the distance is thousands of U-Haul and Ryder trucks descending on the Brockton-Easton town line. Move-in day at Stonehill was last week, when hundreds of college kids return and move into their dorm rooms. That means you'll see a lot more Stonehill sweatshirts at the local bars, coffee shops and convenience stores around Belmont and Washington Street. If you had the chance to change one thing the college kids do in your neighborhood, what would it be? Would you rather they tone down the parties after 2 a.m., or stop using your favorite coffee shop for a social gathering? Or are we being too hard on the students, who bring a lot of spending power to local businesses and hungry parents to neighborhood …

Stonehill Talks Tuition After Obama's Message to Colleges

Stonehill students weigh in on Obama's plan for colleges. And, other news from around the Easton campus.

By Craig Riotto The Summit President Obama delivered a hard message to colleges across America in his State of the Union Address. “If you can’t stop tuition from going up, the funding you get from taxpayers will go down,”Obama said. In his address, Obama also made a direct demand of Congress to extend the tuition tax credit and stop student loan interest from doubling in July. What does this mean for Stonehill and its students? Sophomore Gordon Soper, an engineering major, said Stonehill would benefit from the changes. “Tuition has been gradually increasing every year,” he said. “If schools like Stonehill get more financial help from the government and bring tuition down, it will encourage students to apply to private schools rather than …

The forum, which was sponsored by the Joseph A. Martin Institute, Wickedlocal.com and WCVB.com, was intended as more of a discussion than a debate, according to Enterprise News and Patriot Ledger Editor Chazy Dowaliby, who moderated. Conroy was joined on stage by Marisa DeFranco, a North Shore lawyer specializing in immigration; Attorney Jim King of Dover; Herb …

Greener Horizons at Stonehill College

The school continues to expand its green programs this year

Two environmentally friendly programs are helping Stonehill College to become greener this year.    The first is a car-sharing program, which allows students to rent cars on campus through hourly or daily rates, and the second is a campaign to reduce bottled water on campus. Stonehill launched the car sharing program this September through a partnership with ZipCar, Inc., the worlds’ leading car-sharing network.  It now has two cars on campus to be shared – a Ford Focus and a Honda Insight Hybrid – which are available in a campus parking lot.  Students can borrow them for just an hour, or for multiple days, at rates starting at $7 an hour.   Martin McGovern, Director of Communications and Media Relations, said the program is off to a great…
