White House College Scorecard Shows Stonehill is Expensive but with High Graduation Rate

The White House released a "College Scorecard" after the President's State of the Union Speech last month.

Stonehill College in Easton is expensive, but most students graduate and few default on their student loans. Stonehill's data was released in one place last month after President Barack Obama highlighted an effort to quell the cost of college during his State of the Union Speech. The White House's "College Scorecard" assists parents and students in finding out "where you can get the most bang for your educational buck," according to the Huffington Post. The College Scorecard highlights five pieces of information: costs, graduation rate, loan default rate, median borrowing and the rate of graduate job placement. GOP Senate Candidates to Debate in Easton

The forum is set for Tuesday at Stonehill College.

The three GOP candidates for U.S. Senate will face off for the first time Tuesday in Easton, according to the Boston Globe. State Rep. Dan Winslow, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez will participate in an hour-long forum starting at 7 p.m. at Stonehill College. The debate will be live-streamed on WCVB-TV’s website. The three candidates are vying for the Republican nomination in the April 30 primary. The winner will take on the winner of the Stephen Lynch-Edward Markey battle on the Democratic side of the ballot.

Stonehill Increases Monetary Gift to Town of Easton

A "gift in lieu of taxes" was increased from $20,000 to $30,000 this year, with a promise of future increases

The town-gown relationship between the Town of Easton and Stonehill College, which has been rocky over the last few years, is improving. Last month, Stonehill College presented a $30,000 gift to the town. The amount is an increase over previous years' gifts by $10,000. The college also said it would increase the gift amount in coming years ($35,000 next year and $40,000 the following year). Stonehill is allowing the town to use the money any way it chooses. "We’re very grateful of them for doing that," Town Administrator David Colton told selectmen last week. "This year is the first time they did not ask us to allocate it in any particular way." Andrews Bakery in Easton Building More than Bread for Over 30 Years

Co-owner Julie Andrews talks about how building loyalty in their customers has made them a mainstay in Easton.

Julie Andrews, co owner and operator of Andrews Farm and Bakery, has been making repeat customers out of the town for over 30 years. “Construction was really big at the time and I still remember someone bringing in a two-by-four with the list of sandwiches they wanted made,” she said. Andrews said she originally went to school at Stonehill College for Sociology and taught at Brockton High School for a number of years. At the time, she and her husband Robert had a dairy farm and sold raw milk, but thought opening a retail space may better suit the business. “It evolved into Andrews Bakery,” she said. Stonehill Student Discusses Voting Power of Young Adults

Stonehill Senior Jessica Mardo recently blogged on the Huffington Post.

A Stonehill College senior took to the Huffington Post to discuss voting amongst America's youth and college students. Concerned that too many young people do not go to the polls, Jessica Mardo recently focused her attention on the challenges to greater youth participation in political life. In her blog post, however, Mardo points to a Stonehill initiative that brings together the Martin Institute and campus political clubs. This week, they will open an advice center where students can register to vote, fill out absentee ballots and learn more about the political system.
