The quest to become the "Washington outsider" representing the Republican Party in this year's Massachusetts special senate election was underway at Stonehill College Tuesday night when GOP candidates met in their first primary debate. Winslow (R-Norfolk) said in his closing statement referring U.S. Congressmen Ed Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston). Winslow, former US attorney Michael J. Sullivan, and former Navy SEAL Gabriel E. Gomez discussed a wide-range of issues in the hour-long debate, including Roe vs. Wade, gun control, immigration, social security, and the economy. Stonehill Increases Monetary Gift to Town of Easton

A "gift in lieu of taxes" was increased from $20,000 to $30,000 this year, with a promise of future increases

The town-gown relationship between the Town of Easton and Stonehill College, which has been rocky over the last few years, is improving. Last month, Stonehill College presented a $30,000 gift to the town. The amount is an increase over previous years' gifts by $10,000. The college also said it would increase the gift amount in coming years ($35,000 next year and $40,000 the following year). Stonehill is allowing the town to use the money any way it chooses. "We’re very grateful of them for doing that," Town Administrator David Colton told selectmen last week. "This year is the first time they did not ask us to allocate it in any particular way." Colton said he plans to use the first $20,000 received in the same way it has always been used…

Andrews Bakery in Easton Building More than Bread for Over 30 Years

Co-owner Julie Andrews talks about how building loyalty in their customers has made them a mainstay in Easton.

Julie Andrews, co owner and operator of Andrews Farm and Bakery, has been making repeat customers out of the town for over 30 years. “Construction was really big at the time and I still remember someone bringing in a two-by-four with the list of sandwiches they wanted made,” she said. Andrews said she originally went to school at Stonehill College for Sociology and taught at Brockton High School for a number of years. At the time, she and her husband Robert had a dairy farm and sold raw milk, but thought opening a retail space may better suit the business. “It evolved into Andrews Bakery,” she said. Andrews said that despite moving twice ,she has seen some of the same customers at her store for decades. She thinks it’s the small touches …

Stonehill Student Discusses Voting Power of Young Adults

Stonehill Senior Jessica Mardo recently blogged on the Huffington Post.

A Stonehill College senior took to the Huffington Post to discuss voting amongst America's youth and college students. Concerned that too many young people do not go to the polls, Jessica Mardo recently focused her attention on the challenges to greater youth participation in political life. In her blog post, however, Mardo points to a Stonehill initiative that brings together the Martin Institute and campus political clubs. This week, they will open an advice center where students can register to vote, fill out absentee ballots and learn more about the political system. Easton Roots for Notre Dame Football Team

The Notre Dame football team has long, strong ties to Easton.

Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame, Wake up the echoes cheering her name, Send a volley cheer on high, Shake down the thunder from the sky! What though the odds be great or small, Old Notre Dame will win over all, While her loyal sons are marching Onward to victory! Chorus from the University of Notre Dame Victory March This is the year, finally, that University of Notre Dame football is going to get back on track. Yeah, yeah, I know, the ND faithful — of which I am one — have been saying this for a while now. And during this long time in the collegiate football desert the Irish have given us some good starts — and then fell apart. But this year is going to different. Really. It was a big win for No. 20 ND on Saturday night in East Lansing …

Ross, Father Murphy was not only an ND man but also a BC grad as well. Little know fact was that Fr John J. Murphy's roommate at the Seminary on Notre Dame's Campus was one Fr Joyce who was the EVP of Notre Dame during Ted Hesburgh's entire tenure as President and the man responsible for Touchdown Jesus. So in essence it all started on purchase street in Easton.   more ›
