What Is No More In Easton — Or America

And It Isn't Good

Antonio Povoas, an immigrant from Portugal, was smart, full of wisdom, and hardworking.  His wife, Mary, also from Portugal, was smart, full of wisdom, and hard working as well. The couple made their home in Easton. “Our father and our mother were great parents; they worked hard — and they valued education,” said Joe Povoas (Oliver Ames High School, ‘73).  “My father had only a fourth grade education; my mother graduated from Oliver Ames.” Antonio, a U.S. Army combat medic, and his wife, wanted more for their five children than they had for themselves. “There was never a push for us to go to college — but it was understood that we would get a good education, and we would work hard and pursue careers with opportunity,” said Joe. Joe said…

Stonehill Alum to Coach in Olympics

2004 Stonehill Track and Field Athlete Mario Fraioli will be on Costa Rica's coaching staff in this year's Olympics

From UT San Diego: His collegiate running career complete in 2004 at Division II Stonehill College, where he was a talented but hardly world-class runner, Mario Fraioli issued a bold statement to his father: “I want to be in the 2012 Olympics.” Sure enough, come Friday night at London’s Olympic Stadium, Fraioli will wear the red, white and blue and walk in the opening ceremonies. The colors, though, belong to Costa Rica, not the United States. And Fraioli will be walking as a member of Costa Rica’s track and field coaching staff, not an athlete.

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Patrick as Attorney General?

Would Governor Deval Patrick be a good fit as Attorney General?

With U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder being held in contempt by a Republican heavy House of Representatives, pundits are saying the chances of a new Attorney General are likely should Obama serve in a second term, according to the Boston Herald Peter Ubertaccio, a professor at Stonehill College here in Easton, said Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick may be a good fit. “The chances of a new attorney general in a second Obama administration, if there is one, has increased dramatically,” Ubertaccio told the Herald. "This controversy doesn’t seem to be going away, and there’s traditionally turnover in second terms. ... If the governor is not harboring presidential aspirations, I think he’d be a natural fit for it.” For the full story in …

Stonehill Alum, Yahoo CEO, Apologizes for Resume Error

Scott Thompson apologized this week for errors on his resume relating to his Stonehill College education.

After it broke last week that Stonehill Alum and Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson's resume was incorrect, the CEO issued a memo apologizing. Last week, Thompson was accused of an "inadvertent error" in his resume, which stated that he graduated from Stonehill College with degrees in computer science and accounting. In fact, Stonehill did not offer a computer science degree until four years after he graduated and Thompson's degree only consisted of "accounting." Now, the CEO is apologizing to employees, but shows no indication that he is stepping down, as some have suggested.

Sitting And Talking With One Of The Greatest Of All Time

Sam Jones Has A History With Easton

My childhood friend was in Boston over the past few days.  Many years ago, during summers of the 1970s, when we were kids, we spent many weeks together at Stonehill College at boys’ and girls’ basketball camps. My friend’s name is Wally Ray; he is a distant cousin of NBA Hall of Famer and Boston Celtics great, Sam Jones, who was the co-director of some of those hoops camps at Stonehill all those years ago.  My dad was another co-director of those camps. Many Easton kids, Baby Boomers, have fond recollections of Sam Jones and the camps at Stonehill College. I was fortunate to be able to see Wally and Sam yesterday and sit and talk with them.  I have written about Sam in this space before; that column can be found here: Sam Jones Wally is …

Ah, who of that era can forget the Sam Jones, jumper from the side, off the glass, and Johnny Most yelling, "Bang!" He was also one of the fastest Celtics. Nice story.   more ›
