OA Girls' Lacrosse Looks to Take Next Step

A mix of young and veteran Tigers are looking to advance to the state tourney this year.

After a 7-11 season last year that resulted in the Oliver Ames girls' lacrosse team falling just short of the state tournament, this year's crop of Tigers is hoping to take that next step. "We want to be in the tournament," said OA coach Kelly Downs. "We have a tough schedule. We play Mansfield and Franklin. We play two games against Martha’s Vineyard and two games against Braintree. We don’t have an easy game, so to make the tournament is our No. 1 goal.  We came up short last year by a couple of games." The Tigers, who dropped to 0-4 after a back-and-forth, 17-15, loss against Martha's Vineyard Monday afternoon, are hoping a mix of young talent and veteran leadership can get them over the hump. And if they're looking for big game …

OA Hockey Ends Season With Loss to Franklin in South Sectional Semifinals

The Tigers were out-shot, 40-13 in the loss.

For the second year in a row, Hockomock foe Franklin (18-2-3) knocked off the Oliver Ames hockey team (13-5-4) in the South Sectional Semi-Finals, ending the season for the Tigers. Franklin can thank two quick goals and a dominant first round for setting the tone in the 4-1 win. "I think we were a little over confident when we came out, but they just handed it right to us and we weren’t ready for it," Oliver Ames coach Jim Sullivan said. Franklin's Evan Stawarz, a senior, was assisted by senior Adam Hall with 5:28 left to play in the first period. A short time later, with 2:29 left, Senior Ryan Garland was assisted by freshman Justin Miller to make the score 2-0 after a period. Franklin was also able to hold the Tigers scoreless throughout…

OA Hockey Takes Home Hock Crossover Win Over Mansfield

The Tigers beat the Hornets, 4-2 Saturday.

The Oliver Ames hockey team won one for the Davenport Division Saturday afternoon at Foxborough Sports Center. The Tigers beat Kelly-Rex Division Mansfield, 4-2 in the Hockomock Crossver game. The win also created strong momentum for the 12-4-3 Tigers as they prepare for the State Tournament. "People were saying we get no respect," OA coach Jim Sullivan said. "Well, you don’t get respect unless you play well. If you lose to teams that you should have beaten it comes back to haunt you, so today was a good win" The Tigers came out firing in the first period. After Mansfield Captain Mike Blackman put the Hornets ahead at the 9:07 mark off an assist from fellow Captain Steve Folan, OA's Ryan McGrath answered with a goal 17 seconds later. …

OA Boys' Basketball Upsets Stoughton on Senior Night

Tigers put together a complete game effort to out-battle the Black Knights

OA boys' basketball coach Don Byron knew that to beat the 13-1 Stoughton Black Knights, the Tigers would have to play well in all phases of the game. His team didn't miss a beat. Offensively, defensively, on the glass and from the free-throw line, everything clicked for the Tigers in the 75-67 Davenport Division win at Oliver Ames High School on Senior Night Tuesday. With the win, OA improved to 10-5 (4-2 Davenport) and qualified for the MIAA tournament. "That was terrific end to end on both ends of the floor," Byron said. "I thought defensively, while [Stoughton guard Aaron] Calixte got his 24 (points), he had to work like crazy to get them. And, we managed to hold some of the other guys down. They have weapons everywhere. They have kids …
