Easton Working Toward Energy Reduction

Since becoming a "Green Community," the town is working to reduce energy by 20 percent.

The Town of Easton is making steps towards reducing energy - and the initiative is succeeding, officials say. Town Geographic Information Specialist Adrienne Edwards told Selectmen this week that the town is on its way to achieving its five-year goal of reducing energy by 20 percent. "We’re going to get there," Edwards said. "We’re making very good progress." The commitment to reduce energy was made in 2010 when the state designated Easton as a "Green Community". The designation earned Easton a grant in the amount of $168,300, which was used to upgrade lighting in the school and school parking lots - as well as a new boiler, which will be added to Town Offices. Currently, the Shovel Town is one of 86 towns with the label. In 2009, Easton's…

Muscato's Musings

Beyond Politics

In Our Tight Knit Community It Is Easy To Achieve

I am fond, of course, of touting and evangelizing the benefits of living in a close community in which people share and look out for each other and work together to make life better.   All of this makes life happier.  Several studies have borne out the health benefits of being part of close and caring community.  No surprise to me; it all makes sense.   In a column I wrote which was published at Easton Patch early last summer, I discussed the drawbacks, but mostly I discussed the benefits, of living in a small town – a town such as Easton, which has a lot of a small town feel, even if it isn’t such of a small town anymore.  In the column, I talked about the town of Roseto, PA, and a rigorous academic study that was done on the town to …

January Home Sales Cut in Half For Easton

Year over year drop for the town from 10 to five.

Easton saw its January home sales drop by half in January. The data, compiled by real estate information firm The Warren Group, showed four home sales in Easton last month, down substantially from the 10 sold in January 2011. Massachusetts saw a three percent overall increase in sales in January, ending up with its highest January sales volume since 2007. According to the group, the state had 2,425 homes sold last month, up from 2,348 in 2011. Group CEO Timothy Warren Jr. said in a statement that the increase was positive. "After a decline in sales volume in December, it's promising to see the highest sales volume in five years in January," he said. "Given low mortgage rates and steady prices, there's hope this year may fare a bit better…

Easton Town Administrator Hopes to Restore Lost Positions in Police and Fire Departments

David Colton presented a preliminary budget for FY2013 that had a brighter outlook than previous years.

Easton Town Administrator David Colton is hoping to put a budget forward for Fiscal Year 2013 that will restore two firefighter positions and one police officer position lost this year. "We’re restoring [emergency] personnel from 64 to 67," Colton told Selectmen Monday night. "It's still below [pre-recession levels of] 71, but we're moving in the right direction." The budget outlook has been better than recent years, he said. He also reiterated the need to proceed with caution and rebuild the town's stabilization fund. "I’m hopeful that FY2013 is the beginning of the economic recovery," he said. "Things are starting to turn around. There are a lot of indicators to that." Colton's preliminary budget restores two firefighter positions lost…

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Utility Response Bill [Poll]

The state Senate has passed a bill addressing utilities' emergency response, but is it enough?

Many Massachusetts residents spent days in the dark last year after two unusual weather events -- Tropical Storm Irene and an October snowstorm -- wiped out power to hundreds of thousands of homes. Each time, Easton residents joined local and state officials in expressing their disappointment and anger at utility companies who seemed uncommunicative and slow when it came to restoring services. Now, the Massachusetts Senate is taking steps to change the way utility companies respond during emergencies. According to a press release from the Office of Sen. Richard Ross (R-Wrentham), a bill passed by the Senate on Thursday would require public utility companies to do the following: - After a 24-hour assessment period, "provide twice-daily …
