The library is in the process of adding a new roof.
About Around Town: Every week day, we'll provide you with a scene from around Easton. Let us know what you think about the scene in our comments section! If you've been to the Ames Free Library lately, you've probably noticed a great deal of construction. The above photo was taken Tuesday morning. The library is in the process of replacing the roof on the children's wing of the library. The project is being funded by $70,000 from Community Preservation Funds (voted on at last Spring's Annual Town Meeting), a $70,000 state grant, and private donations.

Easton won a portion of the Community Innovation Challenge Grant
Easton's Ames Free Library received a portion of the $2.25 million recently dispursed by Governor Deval Patrick's office as part of the Community Innovation Challenge Grant program. The $40,000 received by the library will be put towards the creation of a "Creative Commons" at the Queset House - a former Ames mansion that sits behind the main library building. "Queset House is a town treasure and we are extremely grateful to the library for opening it to the public," Board of Selectmen Chair Colleen Corona said in a statement released Thursday. "The plan to outfit its gracious rooms with the technology tools needed to further digital education and collaboration is truly innovative. Those of us who work in town government are always …

- LOCAL CONNECTIONS

Wednesday, January 23
Submitted to Easton Patch: The roof restoration of the much loved Children’s Wing at the Ames Free Library has begun. The elegant clay tile withstood 82 New England winters since it was built in 1931 by Fanny Holt Ames in memory of her husband William Hadwen Ames. The property, which is listed in the State Register of Historic Places, received matching grants from the Massachusetts Historical Commission and from the Town of Easton’s Community Preservation Act, plus numerous individual donations. Additional funding is from the library’s Fanny Holt Ames Bequest. During construction, library visitors are urged to avoid walking near scaffolding, use the temporary outdoor book deposit box, or take a bit of extra time to bring their items back …

Fun and Craziness with Ties to Easton Then and Now
Late last summer, my sister sent me three books that she had read, which she enjoyed. (Suzy didn’t send me the actual physical books she read; she ordered copies of them for me online and had them sent to me.) Among the books she sent me was Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin: Writers Running Wild In The Twenties — Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dorothy Parker, Zelda Fitzgerald, and Edna Ferber, by Marion Meade. I am almost done with the book, which was published in 2004. I tell you, this book is good. Yes, Ms. Millay, Ms. Parker, Ms. Fitzgerald, and Ms. Ferber could all write — indeed they all wrote brilliantly. Their lives were beyond accomplished and adventurous. Their lives were also — in total — a confusion of brilliant literary output, …

And The Ames Free Library Continues To Transition To An Exciting And Wonderful Future
It is often proclaimed in this space the benefits – and for deists, the blessings – that are available in Easton. We have a nice place to live here – and the reason it is so nice is because of hard-working, caring, smart, wise, and focused people who built, preserved, and maintained. I was thinking this yesterday early evening when I stopped by a thank-you reception at the Ames Free Library for Madeline Holt, who is stepping down from her role as executive director of the library, a post she has held since 2008. In Madeline’s tenure as top administrator of the library, the organization has grown, added several valuable programs, expanded its physical footprint – and last year achieved national recognition in being named by Library …

Everytime I come home for a visit, I also visit all the local Easton cemeteries. I used to play in the one that the tour will be held. I have been infatuated with cemeteries since I was a little kid. Just finished reading "American Resting Place" by Marilyn Yalom. It tells the history of our cememteries and burial grounds for the past 400 years. I'm glad to know they do tours. It's always good to…   more ›
