A new roof and a new director are on the horizon.
Touting their newly-won "Best Small Library in America" finalist award and in the process of changing directors, representatives from the Ames Free Library appeared before the Easton Finance Committee Wednesday night to discuss their Fiscal Year 2013 budget and funding for the restoration of an aging roof in the library's children's wing. Jim Fowler, the Finance Chair for the Library's Board of Directors, said the board is hoping to secure a third of its funds for the roof from Community Preservation Act funds, a third from the Massachusetts Historic Commission and a third from its own endowments. In all, the project will cost $210,000. The library is asking for $70,000 from Community Preservation Funds, which the Community Preservation …

Submitted to Easton Patch: ‘Raise the Roof on Reading’ for the Ames Free Library Children’s Wing during April’s National Library Celebration. The much loved Children’s Wing at the Ames Free Library needs a new roof. The elegant clay tile has withstood 81 New England winters since it was built in 1931 by Fanny Holt Ames in memory of her husband William Hadwen Ames, but it’s now time to replace it. “Raise the Roof on Reading” at the Ames Free Library is like an old fashioned barn-raising: an Easton-wide effort to get that new roof in place! If every one of the 9,000 monthly visitors to the library contributed just $5, the equivalent of buying a few cups of coffee a week, nearly one quarter of the money needed to replace the roof would be …

The term “home eco-momics” seems to say it all. Environmentally-friendly, geared towards moms, non-intimidating and clever. That’s the formula mastered by Easton residents Kristi Marsh and Rachel Vidoni in their new book: “Little Changes: Tales of a Reluctant Home Eco-momics Pioneer.” Published just last month, it’s a story about Marsh, who discovered she had breast cancer at the age of 36, and the small ways she changed her life to adopt a healthier lifestyle. “I wanted to convey the message of environmental health, and flip it upside down so it was intriguing and easy to dig into,” she said Marsh, who has a husband and three young children, suffered deeply during her illness. She went through chemotherapy treatments, lost her hair, …

Facebook is everywhere, and if you’re not on it, it’s easy to feel left behind. But with umpteen applications, it can be intimidating to use. How can you control the information? What do you do when you’re tagged? What do you do with a friend’s request, and will he or she know if you don’t accept? All these questions and dozens more were answered last Saturday at a Facebook for Beginners Workshop, sponsored by the Ames Free Library. Hosted by Kevin Kidd, who manages library applications and systems at Boston College Libraries, it was attended by about 25 people. Most were senior citizens, but some were parents of teenagers and young adults, who wanted to catch up with the younger generation skills. “It was exciting, and I would …
